The song has been covered many times. Andy Williams recorded the biggest hit version (#9 on the U.S. pop chart, #1 on the adult contemporary chart for four weeks). The song would also be recorded successfully by Lai himself with a full orchestra, and by Henry Mancini (U.S. #13), Rick Astley, Johnny Mathis, Shirley Bassey, and Nana Mouskouri. Williams performed the song with Miss Piggy in an episode of The Muppet Show. There is also a Romanian cover of this song, by Aurelian Andreescu, as well as a French one by Mireille Mathieu.
N.EX.T also covered this song in an instrumental version, in their album The Return of Next, Part 2.
The renowned Persian popstar, Googoosh, who left Iran in 2000 to break 20 years of silence by the Islamic Government, used this song in her "Medley Baen Almalli" track from her Shabe sepid album.
It has been sampled by DJ SS in the Drum & Bass song "The Lighter", and was also sampled in piano and used in a song called "Dance with the Devil" by the rapper Immortal Technique. In addition, Hi-Tek also sampled Andy Williams' version for the track "Where It Started (NY)" for his album Hi-Teknology²: The Chip.
