- Battle of Ringmere: Danish leader Thorkell the Tall defeats English army, and ravages East Anglia and Mercia.[1]
- 1011
- Danes capture Canterbury, taking Alphege, the Archbishop of Canterbury as a prisoner.[1]
- Byrhtferth of Ramsey writes his Manual, on the subject of time.[1]
- 1012
- April - King Ethelred the Unready pays £48,000 Danegeld.[1]
- 19 April - Danes kill Alphege before leaving the country.[2]
- 1013
- King Sweyn I of Denmark invades England forcing King Ethelred to flee to Normandy.[2]
- July - Sweyn proclaimed as King within the Danelaw.[1]
- December - Sweyn gains control of all of England.[1]
- Lyfing enthroned as Archbishop of Canterbury.
- 1014
- 3 February - Sweyn dies and his son Canute is proclaimed King of England by the Vikings.[2]
- March - Ethelred returns to reclaim his throne whilst Canute returns to Denmark to enforce his rule there.[3]
- Wulfstan II, Archbishop of York writes Sermo Lupi ad Anglos, describing the Danes as "God's judgement on England".[1]
- 1015
- August - Canute launches an invasion of England.[2]
- 1016
- 23 April - King Ethelred dies, and is succeeded by his son Edmund Ironside.[2]
- May - Battle of Brentford: King Edmund defeats Canute.[1]
- Canute besieges London.[1]
- 18 October - Battle of Ashingdon: Canute defeats King Edmund, leaving the latter as king of Wessex only.[2]
- 30 November - King Edmund dies and Canute takes control of the whole country.[2]
- 1017
- July - Canute marries Ethelred's widow Emma of Normandy.[1]
- Canute divies England into the four Earldoms of Wessex, Mercia, East Anglia, and Northumbria controlled by Godwin, Earl of Wessex, Leofric, Earl of Mercia, Thorkell the Tall, and Eiríkr Hákonarson respectively.[1]
- 1018
- Canute succeeds his brother Harald II of Denmark on the Danish throne.[2]
