All you want to know about 2002 Six Nations Championship

The 2002 Six Nations Championship was the third series of the Six Nations Championship. Including the previous incarnations as the Home Nations and Five Nations, this was the hundred-and-eighth series of the northern hemisphere rugby union championship. The annual tournament was won by France, who completed a tournament grand slam.

Bonus point system

To date, the Six Nations has not adopted the bonus-point system that is used in most domestic rugby competitions, and in World Cup pool stages since 2003. Under this system, match points are awarded under the following criteria:

  • 4 points for a win
  • 2 points for a draw
  • 0 points for a loss
  • 1 point for scoring four or more tries, regardless of the match result
  • 1 point for a loss by 7 or fewer points

A comparison of the two systems shows that had the 2002 Six Nations used the bonus point system, the championship winner would have been England, despite France winning all of their matches and thus collecting the Grand Slam. This is one argument against introducing the system for the Six Nations.
