The story's main character, Ray Kinsella, is also the name of the main character in the 1982 book Shoeless Joe by W. P. Kinsella. In the novel Shoeless Joe, Ray Kinsella seeks out J. D. Salinger. The novel was adapted into the 1989 film Field of Dreams by Phil Alden Robinson. In the movie the character of J. D. Salinger was changed to the fictional reclusive author Terence Mann, portrayed by James Earl Jones; Ray Kinsella was portrayed by Kevin Costner.
