Ali Salimi (Persian: علي سليمي), born in 1922 in Baku, was an Iranian musician, composer and tar player. He had been based in Tehran for the last few decades where he made significant contribution to promotion and development of Azeri music.
Many years before his birth, his father had migrated from Mehmandoust village of Ardabil city to Baku to earn livelihood. Ali Salimi attended the classes of the great and famous musician of Azerbaijan, Ahmad BakiKhanov and after a short while he showed such a talent for music that Ahmad Bakikhanov introduced him to the National Orchestra of Azerbaijan. At the time of Stalin, because Ali Salimi's father did not want to change his nationality, returned to Iran along with his family in 1938 (1317 hegira), and resided in his hometown - Ardabil - and obtained birth certificate in his city.
It should be mentioned that, in 1965 (1344 hegira) when the famous singer of Baku, Rashid Behbudov, had come to Iran to have concerts, was very impressed when he listened to the composition Ayriliq, and ask Ali Salimi for the permission to play that composition in Baku. The result, of playing the composition Ayriliq of Ali Salimi in Baku, was that Rashid Behbudov won the utmost fame.
Ali Salimi was invited to Tabriz in 1981 as the director of the East Azarbaijan TV Orchestra. He conducted the orchestra till his passing away in 1997 and at the meantime, he established a private music school in Iran for Azeri music in 1984.
The statute is placed at the site of cultural organization of UNESCO as the great composer of the East for the sight of the visitors. Ali Salimi obtained degree 5 (the highest degree in the art of music) in composition from Azerbaijan, and he was the official member of the prominent composers of Baku.
Unfortunately at the dawn of April 22nd, the same years, passed away at the age of 74 due to cerebral apoplexy, and so all artists and art-lovers became bereaved.
He was used to say that Ardabil is my city and I love Ardabil city.
