At the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria, the six alpine skiing events were contested from January 30 to February 7, 1964. The men's downhill was held at Patscherkofel, the other five events at Axamer Lizum. [1]
The Olympics returned to Innsbruck just 12 years later in 1976, after Denver returned its winning bid.
This was the first Olympics in which the finishing times were recorded in hundreths of a second, rather than tenths.

World Championships
From 1948-80, the alpine skiing events at the Winter Olympics also served as the World Championships, held every two years. With the addition of the giant slalom in 1952, the combined event was dropped as an Olympic event until 1988, but remained as a World Championship event. From 1952-80, World Championship medals were awarded in the combined event, which used the results from the downhill and slalom events.
