Aminuddin Dagar

All you want to know about Aminuddin Dagar

Aminuddin Dagar (1923-2000) was a famous exponent of Dhrupad style of singing.

Nasir Amin-ud-din Dagar was one of the four famous sons of Nasiruddin Dagar, who was himself a legendary Dhrupadiya. Dhrupad singing has been preserved by the family over several generations. Of Nasiruddin Dagar's four sons, the two eldest ones -- Moinuddin Dagar (1919-1966) and Aminuddin Dagar -- formed a pair known as Senior Dagars. And the younger duo of Faiyazuddin and Zaheeruddin came to be known as Junior Dagar Brothers.

After Moinuddin's early death, Aminuddin's public performances became rarer. He continued to teach his younger brothers, and occasionally performed solo, or with distant cousins Zia Mohiuddin Dagar and Zia Fariduddin Dagar. During 1950s, he revived public interest in Dhrupad style of singing with his elder brother Moinuddin. The duo made a name for itself among several European followers.

Aminuddin Dagar had a more sonorous voice, compared to his gruff sounding brothers. And while the style of singing rewards gruff voice, Aminuddin's melodiousness imparted extra sweetness to it without compromising its gravitas.
