Annamalai (1992) is a Tamil language movie directed by the Tamil Director Suresh Krishna. It stars Rajinikanth, Kushboo and Sarathbabu in the lead roles. It is a loosely based on Rakesh Roshan's Khudgarz.
Annamalai (Rajnikanth), and Ashok (Sarathbabu), have been best friends since childhood. Annamalai is a milkman while Ashok is the only son of a rich businessman (Radharavi). When Ashok falls in love with Geetha (Rekha), a poor girl, his father is naturally against the wedding. But Annamalai holds the wedding and earns his ire. Plotting to drive a wedge between his son and Annamalai, the businessman hints that he would like to build a hotel on Annamalai's land. Annamalai gives the land to Ashok without even accepting money for it but when Ashok later talks about bringing down his house, he slaps Ashok's father in anger. Ashok orders Annamalai's house to be bulldozed to the ground which drives Annamalai to challenge that he would become a bigger and more successful hotelier than Ashok. Annamalai, with all his hardwork and honesty becomes one of the biggest business men in the city. Annamalai's daughter and Ashok's son study in the same college and they fall in love which Annamalai is against because of the hatred that he has on Ashok. During an auction, Annamalai tricks Ashok to buy a land for 12 crores which not worth more than 2. Ashok's house has to be sold for the debt of 12 crores and Annamalai buys it. With all goodness in heart and the old friendship in mind, Annamalai gives the house again to Ashok. Manoramma returns the house documents to Ashok at his place and Radharavi pleads for pardon. Meanwhile, Sargunam ('Nizhalgal' Ravi) plans to kill Ashok for money and hires an assassin. Annamalai saves Ashok and they become friends again. They both plan to get their children married to each other and "They live happily ever after."
Rajnikanth lights up the screen in both the comic and serious portions. Kushboo serves as a nice foil for him. She shares a good chemistry with him and shows nice flair for comedy. Sarathbabu, who has shared the screen in several of Rajnikanth's hit films, and Rekha are adequate. Radharavi, with a mannerism of scratching the back of his neck, is impressive when he asks for forgiveness from Manorama, while 'Nizhalgal' Ravi is effective as a wolf in sheep's clothing.
