Assam University is a teaching-cum-affiliating University. The University has nine Schools which offer Social Sciences, Humanities, Languages, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Information Sciences, Technology and Management Studies. There are 29 Departments under these nine Schools. The five districts under the jurisdiction of Assam University have 51 Undergraduate Colleges.[1] Drawing its faculty from many disciplines, from all over the country, the university sustains a multidisciplinary approach to higher education.
The campus, in an area of 600 acres, is situated at Dargakona, about 20 km from Silchar. The University is situated in South Assam, bordering Bangladesh, Mizoram, Manipur, Maghalaya, and Nagaland.

Facilities
- Hostel: Hostel facilities for the students or research scholars are available from this year. Accommodations in one Gents Hostel and one Ladies Hostel are being provided to students. Apart from these, privately run hostels are also available in the nearby Irongmara & Dwarbond areas for the university students.
- Computer Centre: One Computer Centre located inside the campus is available for the use by both students and academic community.
- Transport: Two buses for the students ply between Silchar and the campus (about 20 KM. from the town) daily for bringing the students from Silchar town and dropping them back. Besides this, chartered buses for staff also ply between Silchar and the campus.
- Major Scientific Equipments: With the one time assistance from the UGC and the funds available from other agencies like DST, DAE and CSIR the various Science Departments have procured the following state of the art instruments:
- Department of Physics: LCR Meter (HP 4263), Meade computerised 16" Telescope, FTIR Spectometer
- Department of Chemistry: UV -VIS- Spectrometer, Polarizing Microscopy, Pyris 1 DSC System.
- Department of Ecology & Environmental Science: OXi Top BOD Determination System, Laser Leaf Area Meter, Anderson Sampler.
- Department of Life Science: Leica-Leitz Trinocular Phase contrast microscope, CO2 incubator, PCR system, Growth chamber.
- Library: Assam University Central library located inside the campus is available for students. Presently the Library has a holding of 52,557 books. The Library subscribes to 13 foreign and 186 Indian journals, 16 news papers, and 12 popular magazines. Assam University Library is one of the libraries selected by U.G.C. for automation and networking under INFLIBNET Programme in the year 1998-1999. The Library automation is under progress and a database of 25000 books have already been created using SOUL software provided by INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad. Besides the Central Library, most of the departments have their own Departmental Library for ready reference by the students.[3]
