The Australia national cricket team is due to tour England, Scotland and Wales during the 2009 English cricket season. The team is scheduled to play five Test matches, seven one-day internationals and two Twenty20 internationals against England. There will be a further one-day international against Scotland and the Australians will play four other first-class matches in England. In addition, Australia will take part in the 2009 ICC World Twenty20 before the start of the Ashes Series.

The series of five Test matches between England and Australia is for The Ashes and, for the first time, an Ashes match will be held in Wales.[1] Australia is the current holder of The Ashes by winning the 2006-07 series after losing to England in 2005.

Build up

In November 2008, former England all-rounder Ian Botham put forward his belief that England will take an "easy" victory.[2] From the Australian team, Shane Warne stated that be believed England would be beaten 5-0 as per the previous series.[2]

What I've seen so far, I don't see as too much of a threat and if England's bowlers stay fit then they'll win the series... I don't think they've got the bowlers - they're weak in the bowling attack and getting old... I predicted it in 2005 and I predict it again now.... It's never straightforward, but I think we'll dominate because we have the bowlers and that's the one thing Australia are lacking... They've got Brett Lee who's a terrific performer and after that there's no spinner, there's no McGrath out there. –Botham[2]
