Awrah (Arabic: عورة‎) is a term used within Islam which denotes the parts of the body that are not meant to be exposed in public. This concept is, therefore, linked with hijab, or sartorial hijab. The exact definition varies between different schools of Islamic thought.

Definition

Men

In Sunni interpretations,the awrah of a man is what is between navel and knees, this means both males and females should not uncover their genitals at any time except when in privacy . At all times must men and women be wearing garments that are loose and the material is not transparent as to see the skin colour and shape of the other (male or female).[1] [2]

Women

Women's Awrah is a more complicated issue and it changes in situations:

  • In front of a mahram (close male relative), a woman should cover all her body except the head and the arms.",[3]
  • In front of other Muslim females, a woman's awrah is what is between navel and knees.[4]
  • Awrah in front of non-Muslim women is a point of debate. Some scholars say that women should cover all but the hands and face. Other scholars say that women's awrah in front of non-mahram women is the same as in front of Muslim women.[5]
  • Awrah in front of unrelated men (either Muslim or non-Muslim) is also a matter of dispute. There is a difference of opinion between Muslims whether the face and hands of a woman are required to be covered. The issue of Niqab has continued to arouse debates both past and present, concerning whether it is mandatory or just an act favored by Allah.[6] Salafi Muslims believe that a woman's awrah in front of unrelated men is her entire body including her face and hands.

  • Awrah in Salah: A Muslim woman should cover her entire body except the face and the hands while praying Salah.

And all of the woman is awrah; her body, her voice, and it is not permissible for her to uncover that unless out of necessity, or need such as witnessing in court, or a disease that is affecting her body…” ref>
