The BET Awards '07

Tagline: The Main Event

The nominations for the BET Awards '07 were announced live from Hollywood at a press conference and live on BET's video countdown show, 106 & Park on Wednesday, May 16, 2007. Tichina Arnold, 50 Cent, T.I., and Robin Thicke announced the nominations in Hollywood at a press conference.

The 2007 Awards took place on June 26, with Mo'Nique as host. The "106 & Park: Live from the Red Carpet" pre-show was hosted by 106 & Park hosts Terrence J and Rocsi. Diana Ross was honored with the BET Lifetime Achievement Award and Don Cheadle was honored with the Humanitarian Award. T.I., Robin Thicke, Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland were among the number of performers. Fans were able text their vote for which of 50 Cent's recent singles he will perform. They were given a choice between "Straight to the Bank" and "Amusement Park". "Amusement Park" received the most votes, therefore that was what 50 Cent performed, along with Tony Yayo.

Beyoncé received the most nominations in 2007, earning 6, one for "Best Female R&B Artist", another for the "Viewer's Choice Award" ("Irreplaceable"), two for "Best Collaboration" ("Déjà Vu" and "Upgrade U", both featuring Jay-Z), and two more for "Video of the Year" ("Beautiful Liar" and "Irreplaceable").

Hip Hop

The BET Awards for Best Male and Female Hip-Hop Artist are given to the overall best male and female rappers because of their albums, singles, and videos the same or previous year. Missy Elliott has been nominated for a BET Award for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist every year since the awards ceremony started in 2001, except for 2005. She also has won every year except for the 2001 and 2005 Award shows.

In 2007 there was no award category for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, there was only the BET Award for Best Male Hip-Hop Artist which was simply renamed Best Hip-Hop Artist. The reason is because most female rappers had not released any promotional material, mainly due to recording albums, criminal charges, and legal disputes.

New Artist

The BET Award for Best New Artist is given to an artist who made their debut the previous or same year of the awards ceremony. A former group member can be nominated for the award if they have made their solo debut. For example, Omarion was a member of the hip hop quartet B2K from 2001 until 2004 and B2K had already been nominated for a BET Award for Best New Artist in 2002. Despite this, Omarion was nominated for the category in 2005 because he made his solo debut in the same year. Controversy arose when Jennifer Hudson won the award in 2007 even though her only solo release at the time was a single of "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going"; her first album was scheduled for release in October 2007.
