The Billie Awards (also known as The Billies) is an annual awards ceremony in Los Angeles, California, held by the Women's Sports Foundation. [1] The Billie is named after the organization's founder and CEO, Billie Jean King.[2]

History
Its website describes the purpose of The Billies in the following manner:
- The media shapes our perceptions of what the female athlete looks like โ who she is โ whether or not her power is beautiful [...] Billie Jean King and a host of champion female athletes [gather] in Beverly Hills to celebrate those members of the media who are doing right by the female athlete. Read more about this blowout event that raises funds to promote sports and physical activity for girls and women![3]
The first Billie Awards ceremony was held on April 20, 2006.[2][4] Sir Elton John performs annually at this event.[5]
Categories
- Entertainment awards have been given to works released between January 2003 and December 2007. Awards are offered "based on insightful portrayal of women in sports, impact, originality and overall quality of work." [6]
- Journalism awards are given to works "based on insightful portrayal of women in sports, originality and overall quality of work."[6]
- Breakthrough And Innovation awards are given to historical or current works of female athletes which "challenge the status quo of women/girls as athletes." [6]
- Industry Leader (offered only from 2006-2007) awards are given to "individuals who have created an exemplary body of work that celebrates female athletes and/ or female participation in physical activity eligible."[6]
- Outstanding Journalist (began in 2008) awards are given to "women who have excelled in covering sports and become a role model in sports media."[6]
