The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee of Pakistan is, in principle, the highest ranking military official in the country; even if the Chief of Army Staff appears the one in charge, as can be seen by the number of times the Chief of Army Staff has overthrown the government and declared himself the ruler of the country.
The post was created by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto when he was Prime Minister[1971-76], and the first chairman was General Mohammad Shariff.
The current holder of the office is Tariq Majid.
