The Constitution of Mauritania is the founding legal document of Mauritania. It was adopted in December 17, 1980. The constitution covers areas such as Islam being the State religion (Article 5) and that the President must be a Muslim (Article 23) [1] [2]. A 2006 referendum made the first changes since its initiation.[3]
