Daljit Dhaliwal (born 1962) is a British newsreader and television presenter.[1][2]

Dhaliwal is now best known for presenting the critically acclaimed program Foreign Exchange on PBS and a PBS Global Watch documentary which includes one-on-one interviews. She had been previously working on and off as a newsreader for BBC World News since November 2005, mostly as substitute for Katty Kay. Daljit also does news segments for ABC News Now.[1] On January 12th 2008 she began as sole anchor for the fourth season of Foreign Exchange. Daljit later did Global Watch on April 2008.

She had previously been a presenter starting out for BBC Home News as a field reporter and then Channel 4 News. She left BBC to host ITN's World News and World Focus on weekends. After that she moved to Atlanta, Georgia, wooed there by CNN International and CNNfn to host Your World Today. [2] Daljit has also worked for the United Nations and UNICEF, hosting important conferences in New York City and The Hague, Netherlands. Daljit hosted Wide Angle for two seasons, but left to do her other shows and was replaced by reporter Aaron Brown.

Early life

She was born in London, England, grew up in Southall (west London) to Punjabi Sikh parents of the Dhaliwal Jat family who both emigrated from Sujapur Ludhiana, Punjab, India. She earned an MA degree in politics, history and economics from the University of London.

Career with BBC and ITN & PBS

Dhaliwal started her career as a field reporter for BBC Home TV News, then became anchor at ITN World News.

When ITN started the ITN World News she regularly presented the evening bulletins until the end of 2001. She presented with Andrew Harvey with each alternating each hour throughout the evening. Later in 2001, Dhaliwal's ITN World News broadcast was cancelled due to lack of corporate funding, (PBS switched from ITN World News to BBC World News which has late breaking superior news reports) Daljit also was co-host of the inaugural season of PBS's Wide Angle in 2002. She returned as sole anchor in 2006.

Move to the United States

Dhaliwal left London to work in Atlanta, Georgia at CNN International and CNNfn. Dhaliwal became a temporary replacement newsreader on BBC World in November 2005 to substitute for Katty Kay who was on maternity leave. She had co-anchored primarily from WNET's studios on West 44th Street in Times Square, New York, but usually reports now from the BBC World News studios in Washington, DC.

Dhaliwal returned to anchor and host Wide Angle on July 11, 2006. She has since left Wide Angle. Her one on one personal interviews as host of Foreign Exchange, and Global Watch are now her main work. She lives in New York City. She was married to Lee Patrick Sullivan for two years, but they have since divorced.

In addition to her other shows, Dhaliwal can currently be seen on ABC News Now, hosting a variety of programs for the digital network. Daljit now has three shows on which she works. One on PBS and one on BBC and another on ABC News Now.

Recognition

In May 1999, she was named one of People Magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People in the World" and in August 1999, Esquire Magazine placed her on their "Women We Love" list.
