To date, Daniel has released only two solo singles—"City Rules" (which features New York MC Saigon), and "She's Got Me" (originally included in DJ/Producer Mark Ronson's "Here Comes the Fuzz" album) (both 2004). While neither song had any huge commercial success, both songs have become favourites in Australian clubs and urban music circles; and have won APRA and ARIA awards (APRA for most performed Dance work - "City Rules[1], ARIA for best Urban release[2]); with "City Rules" also getting some airplay on the major Australian commercial radio stations FOX FM (Melbourne)/2Day FM and Nova.
His 2007 collaboration with Ronson (a version of The Smiths' "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before"), had huge commercial success in the UK where it was released as the lead-off single for Ronson's album "Version" (reaching #2).
Daniel is currently working on his debut album Love and War[3]; which will feature production from Ronson. It will be released through Marlin Records in Australia and Allido Records (distributed through J Records) in the U.S in April 2009 (according to Daniel's announcement on Mark Ronson's East Village Radio show of 31 October 2008). A guest appearance on the upcoming album by Phrase has also been confirmed[4]
Daniel cites Stevie Wonder, Prince, Jeff Buckley and Herbie Hancock as his major influences.
Daniel grew up in the Dandenong Ranges area of Melbourne and attended Kallista PS, Billanook College and Blackburn High School. His musical education began with violin lessons in classes for lower income children; after dropping out of school, he focused all his attention on music, taking vocal lessons and performing in clubs around Melbourne[5] He currently divides his time mostly between New York, and London while working on his album.[6]
Daniel has supported Kanye West on his Australian tour, opened for Biz Markie in Brooklyn and Justin Timberlake in London; and headlined 2004's "City Rules" tour of Australia with Mark Ronson, Scribe and P-Money. He has performed live on various radio and television programs, including Late Night with Conan O'Brien, Triple J's Hip Hop show, Radio 1's Live Lounge show, and Sunrise. He has performed at various festivals and events including the Montreux Jazz Festival (alongside Erick Sermon); the 2004 St Kilda Festival and 2004 Melbourne World AIDS Day Concert.
During 2007, he toured the UK with Mark Ronson (as well as performing several solo shows). He also performed with Mark and the BBC Concert Orchestra at the 2007 BBC Electric Proms.
He also performed at the MTV Video Music Awards on 9 September 2007 alongside Ronson who acted as the official DJ for the proceedings.
On 22 February 2008, he appeared on BBC Radio One with Mark Ronson to perform a special version of his track 'Stop Me' as part of the early morning Chris Moyles breakfast show.
He also played at the 2008 Brit Awards alongside Mark Ronson
Also, he sang "stop me" on stage during Mark Ronson's Glastonbury 2008 set on the "other stage" on the afternoon of Sunday 29th of June.
Daniel performed in Australian for the first time since 2006 at the Global Gathering shows in November 2008 with Mark Ronson's Version Players.
Many Smiths fans were critical of the Merriweather/Ronson version of "Stop Me" despite the song being approved by Morrissey and Johnny Marr prior to its release[7].
In a September 2008 Telegraph blog post,[8], columnist Neil McCormick said that while "the record sounds rich and vibrant", Merriweather had the "the vocal character of a jumped up boy band singer".
In 2005, Merriweather recorded vocals for a song by Freeway, but this track remains unreleased.
