The term dome light is most commonly used to refer to the interior cabin lamp of a car. A dome light may also be a light affixed to the ceiling of a room or building. In a vehicle it is considered a safety feature although in most vehicles it is standard equipment.
The dome refers to the protective cover over the light source itself to diffuse the light and protect the lighting element from damage and accidental contact with the occupant's head or hat.
