Enlargement of the United Nations

This article is about the enlargement of the United Nations (UN) — a list of its member states sorted in chronological order according to their dates of admission to the UN. Currently there are 192 members states in the UN.

The names of the member states are listed according to the ones they used when they were originally admitted to the UN. The United Nations General Assembly resolutions which admitted the member states are also showed. Notes are given if a member state has changed its name since being admitted, or has its seat continued by a successor state. Former UN members whose seats were not continued by any state are displayed in italics.

These nations were the 51 original members of the UN. 50 of them signed the United Nations Charter at the United Nations Conference on International Organization in San Francisco on 26 June 1945, while Poland, which was not represented at the conference, signed it later.

  • The Byelorussian SSR changed its name to "Belarus" in 1991 after declaring independence.

  • China's seat in the UN was initially taken by the Republic of China. It has been taken by the People's Republic of China since 25 October 1971, due to the decision of United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 (see China and the United Nations).

  • Czechoslovakia ceased to be a UN member on 1 January 1993 after its dissolution.

• Egypt
  • Egypt merged with Syria to form the "United Arab Republic" on 22 February 1958. Syria resumed as a separate UN member on 13 October 1961 after having resumed its status as an independent state. The United Arab Republic changed its name back to "Egypt" on 2 September 1971.

  • Iran changed its name to the "Islamic Republic of Iran" in 1979.

  • Philippine Commonwealth changed its name to the "Philippines" in 1946 after being granted full independence.

  • Syria merged with Egypt to form the "United Arab Republic" on 22 February 1958. It resumed as a separate UN member on 13 October 1961 after having resumed its status as an independent state, and changed its name to the "Syrian Arab Republic".

• Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic
  • The Ukrainian SSR changed its name to "Ukraine" in 1991 after declaring independence.
• Union of Soviet Socialist Republics
  • USSR's seat in the UN was continued by the Russian Federation on 24 December 1991 upon the imminent dissolution of the USSR.

• Yugoslavia
  • After the dissolution of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, the newly formed Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was not allowed to continue Yugoslavia's seat in the UN. Yugoslavia officially ceased to be a UN member on 1 November 2000 after the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was admitted as a new UN member.
