Fairfield is a railway station in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, located in the suburb of Fairfield, on the Hurstbridge railway line. Fairfield is classed as a Host Station and is in Metcard Zone 1.
Fairfield is located at the western end of the Station Street level crossing, with station access from Railway Place and Wingrove and Station Streets.
The station consists of two side platforms: Platform 1 (Flinders Street bound) has a large weatherboard building, while platform 2 (Hurstbridge bound) has a smaller weatherboard building. A large Metcard machine is located at the entrance to platform 1, which is able to dispense most ticketing options available and also accept notes and coins. A small coin-only Metcard machine is located at the entrance to platform 2.
A footbridge is situated at the Melbourne end of the station, whilst a disused signal box is also situated at the level crossing end of the station. Fairfield Industrial Dog Object, a 6-metre-tall wooden dog is located at the western side of the station.
Fairfield station opened on May 8, 1888, as Fairfield Park. It was renamed to Fairfield in 1943.[1] Fairfield was the former junction station for the Outer Circle railway line from 1891 to 1893,[2] and the APM Siding from 1919 to the 1990s.
