Filmfare Awards South are the oldest and most prominent film awards given for Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada films in India. They are given annually to honour the best talents and provide encouragement and incentive to the South Indian film industry.

History

The Filmfare Awards South were first introduced in 1990. Readers of Filmfare Magazine were polled to decide the winners, and over 10,000 readers spread throughout South India participated in the polls; trophies were given to winners of the popular vote. In the first awards function, held on 21st March 1990, there was a bust-up about actors claiming prizes but it was resolved.[citation needed] Kamal Haasan in Kollywood, Mammootty in Malayalam and Chiranjeevi in Tollywood has received most of the filmfare awards.[citation needed]

The Kollywood Paraatai was the original name of the award ceremony, named after Kollywood.[citation needed]

To celebrate the 10th year of the awards the statues were made in silver.
