The gluteal cleft, natal cleft or anal cleft is the groove or crack between the buttocks that runs from just below the sacrum to the perineum, so named because it forms the visible border between the external rounded protrusions of the gluteus maximus muscles. The gluteal cleft is above the location of the anus.

A number of slang terms exist for the gluteal cleft, such as "Buttcrack" or "Plumber's Crack" and "Arse"(which derives from the Latin name "Crena Analis")^{[citation needed]}.

Laws regarding exposure

In an article appearing in Newsweek, Flint, Michigan, Chief of Police David Dicks described three degrees of criminal intent his police officers were ordered to arrest on sight. If people wear their trousers sagged, they are in violation. Inch by inch, the three categories are, Warning: pants sagged, but above butt; Disorderly Conduct: Pants below butt; and Indecent Exposure: Below butt with skin. These violations are punishable by 93 days to a year in jail and fines of up to $500. (Detailed descriptions are omitted in the on-line version of the article, although the graphic is shown.) ^[1]
