The Hultsfred Festival (Hultsfredsfestivalen in Swedish) is an annual music festival held in Hultsfred, Sweden. It takes place at the lake Hulingen during three days in the middle of June, from Thursday to Saturday. Since the first festival in 1986, its attendance has increased from 7,500 visitors to approximately 32,000 people in 2005.

With its five different stages, the Hultsfred Festival hosts a large number of bands per year (154 in 2007) from all over Scandinavia and the world alike.

History

In 1992 Gary Moore demandes that all other stages to be quiet during his set. Moore was told that they would be, but in reality they werent.

In 1994 an unknown band called Kent performes at a beer tent, and were asked by Nordman's soundtech to turn down their volume.

According to Robert Smith of The Cure, Björk was furius over the long set they played and asked them not to perform an encore.

In 1997 the entire Wu Tang Clan perform together at the Hawaii stage, later the rest of the tour is cancelled.

At the 1999 festival, a 19-year-old woman died of suffocation during a concert with Hole. [1]

During a 25 minute long black out in 2000 the Loosegoats perform a now legenderay acoustic set at Teaterladan.

In 2003 In Flames were called in at the last second to replace Linkin Park, to mark the occasion In Flames performed in Link In Flames T-shirts.

At the 2005 festival The Hellacopters, Sahara Hotnights and Sator all played unannunced concerts each night on the Pampas stage.

In 2006, the festival booked Babyshambles, the band fronted by Pete Doherty. Because of Doherty's widely reported drug addiction, the arrangers of the festival were criticised even before the festival had begun, as the festival profiles itself as being anti-drugs. The arrangers defended the booking by saying that the band was booked for its music and not its members' personal lives. After being delayed for more than an hour, the concert took place with Doherty attacking photographers, throwing a guitar at the audience and finally falling off stage in a failed attempt at stage diving. Immediately after the concert Doherty was arrested by the Hultsfred police and fined for drug possession.[2]

Recently Rockparty revealed that the 2009 festival will be held during four days instead of the regular three.
