The movie is a powerful story that deals with feminism and patriarchy in the middle class of India in the 1980s. The movie starts with Mahinder(Naseeruddin Shah) getting down at the railway station and getting into a waiting room just as it starts to rain heavily. Another woman named sudha (Rekha) tries to hide herself from him. They see each othr an a flashback starts the story.we see that naseeruddin shah has a accomplished business dealing with photography. He respects his grandfather (Shammi Kapoor) immensely, incidentally had been engaged to sudha for the past 5 years but always made some excuses to delay the marriage, however this time his grandfather has fixed the marriage to the first week of the next month. He reveals to sudha that he has an affair with a eccentric girl called maya(Anuradha Patel). He returns to tell maya but maya has disappeared leaving him poetrys (which she usually did). The film returne to present day and we see that mahinder and sudha are conversing with each other about their past habits which mahinder terms as being very peculiar through one of maya's poetry's when sudha asks her about maya he changes the topic.Back to the flashback we see that mahinder has married sudha and is quite happy but the sudden return of Maya causes tensions in their married life. Maya however is very fond of sudha (although they never met) and calls her "didi" as she marks her a superior in the common factor of loving Mahinder. In the meanwhile mahinder tells to sudha all the eccentric and unfeminie things maya did over the years that they lived together.here comes the masterpiece song of bollywood Mera Kuch Samaan where maya describes that so many things of maya are there which are still unreturned by Mahinder. At this jucture sudha realizes that she had come between them and leaves. Mahinder unable to bear the shock receives a heart attack but is saved and looked after by maya.sudha continues as a teacher in panchgani. Back in present day mahinder tells sudha the truth. Maya realized that she was the sole cause why sudha left mahinder and rides off on abike and dies in an accident. Sudha's husband (Shashi Kapoor) comes to take her away, she touches the feet of mahinder and marks him her superior and takes the permission (Ijaazat) to leave which she did not last time. The movie ends with the both walking off in different directions.
