It is used here not as a mere adornment or for the identification of Mr. Gore, but rather for the purposes of analysis and critical commentary of his guest appearance on the show. It is not possible to create a free alternative, since the subject it depicts (Mr. Gore's conscious, severed head in a jar) is not real, and the image's status as a unique work of creative art is the reason for including it in the article in the first place.
