Intelligent Creatures is an artist-driven Visual Effects house dedicated to helping some of cinema’s finest directors tell some of their most compelling stories; working on such films as Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Stranger Than Fiction, Babel, Hairspray and Watchmen. With a fully integrated 2D compositing and 3D animation pipeline and a wealth of on-set experience, the Company stands among the industry’s most progressive VFX creators. We work closely with our clients to ensure that both your creative and budgetary needs are met. Intelligent Creatures relentlessly pursues its mission to be the leading company in the world providing Visual Effects that play a strong supporting role in high-end, creatively driven feature films.


Company Overview • Company founded in 2003. • We have a combined 93 years of Senior Management experience in the Visual Effects industry. • We work out of a brand new 10 000 square foot, state of the art VFX production facility. • We have a 2K in house projector that we use for dailies and weeklies. This allows us to see our work in film resolution, allowing us to address the needs of our clients effectively. • Current capacity for 90+ artists plus management and the infrastructure to build a third story and double our capacity.

Officially opening its doors in 2003, Intelligent Creatures has attracted such clients as Warner Brothers, Miramax Films, MGM, New Line Cinema, and 20th Century Fox.


Intelligent Creatures’ Production Management & Support Intelligent Creatures has assembled a talented group of individuals to lead our crew of artists. Below is an overview of our key players.


Lon Molnar, C.E.O. / Visual Effects Supervisor As co-founder of Intelligent Creatures, Lon has led many successful projects such as Babel, The Matador, and Watchmen. Beginning his career in graphic design, Lon found his passion in motion pictures and, after attending the Vancouver Film School, never looked back. Today, Lon is a leader in Toronto's Visual Effects community with a reputation for achieving filmic excellence by collaborating with creative people who share the same passion for detail and design. Lon takes his role as a leader seriously and makes significant contributions guiding aspiring youth at various educational facilities.


Michael Hatton, C.T.O. Michael has served as a Visual Effects Technical Advisor on just about every major project undertaken by Intelligent Creatures since its inception, including Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium, The Number 23, The Fountain, Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Stay. Before co-founding Intelligent Creatures, he completed a Masters degree in Architecture from the University of Natal in South Africa that has equipped him with a special facility for synthesizing the technical and creative sides of his work. His deep knowledge of animation and compositing software are among the many strengths he brings to the Company.


Darren Bell, Executive Producer Darren joined Intelligent Creatures with a wealth of experience in production, including contributions to the feature films K19: The Widow Maker and The Circle as well as to the television series Monk. His foray into Visual Effects began with The Sentinel, to which he contributed as an Associate Visual Effects Producer and as an Assistant to the Executive Producer. Now Executive Producer for IC, Darren has the tools to help a film come to life, from the first key strokes to the final product. Darren also holds a degree in Geography from Carleton University and is a certified mediator because even he believes there should be limits to chaos.


Lev Kolobov, Visual Effects Supervisor Lev’s love of VFX began in childhood while watching the finale of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Fast-forward to the present and Lev’s childhood dream has come true. He is currently an Intelligent Creatures VFX Supervisor, recently overseeing Traitor, having begun with IC as a compositor. He has also served as designer and lead compositor on projects such as The Fountain, The Matador and Silent Hill. Lev immigrated to Canada from his native St. Petersburg, Russia. In high school he majored in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence before studying cinematography and animation at university. In Canada, Lev attended the Digital Animation program at Centennial where he is still a part time teacher.


Chris Nokes, Visual Effects Line Producer Chris brings a unique perspective to IC as he has a firm grounding in both the arts and technology. Chris holds a B.A.A. in Image Arts from Ryerson University and has a plethora of experience in post-production and project management. Prior to joining IC in 2006, he worked at CORE as a Production Coordinator on Disney's The Wild and as Assistant Post Production Supervisor on Starhunter 2300, where he was able to hone his technical skills and his passion for bringing out the best in every production.


Intelligent Creatures’ Technology and New Facility

Intelligent Creatures takes particular pride in the technical side of creating stunning visual effects. The latest software, tools, technology, and the ability to leverage all available resources has allowed Intelligent Creatures to create seamless visual effects critical to the storyline in many motion pictures. IC has also recently moved to a new, state-of-the-art facility in order to further enhance its production capabilities. Outlined below are the main technologies utilized at Intelligent Creatures.


New Facility Intelligent Creatures' new home features advanced infrastructure, increased production area and new technology; including a Review/DI Projection Theatre, expanded server and rendering facilities.


Animation Industry standard 3D animation tools are used combined with custom tools and scripts and third party plugins. Intelligent Creatures also has the ability to create complex crowd scenes with built in Artificial Intelligence and the ability to use key-framed or motion captured animation.


Compositing The Compositing Artists have access to a full complement of plugins that allow them to make the most use of Nuke. Intelligent Creatures has a close relationship with the developers and technical support staff at Nuke.


Digital Matte Painting Along with the Compositing and Animation tools, the Matte Painting department also uses industry standard tools to create high quality matte paintings and texture maps for all stages of the visual effects production pipeline.


Tracking Intelligent Creatures has a full complement of tracking software packages to handle all tracking issues and deal with complex three dimensional camera and object movement.


Rendering Intelligent Creatures utilizes high end rendering applications, including GPU accelerated renders that make optimal use of video hardware.


Color Using the latest technology, IC maintains the integrity of the color that has been put onto the film and ensures that the only changes made are those that the Director has requested. This allows the greatest range and flexibility when it comes to grading and the DI process.


In-House Development Technology is nothing without the talent to use it. Dedicated in-house developers and artists with scripting and coding skills enables Intelligent Creatures to make the best use of our tools and talent.


Production Management Intelligent Creatures uses its internal database and project management tools to leverage all resources and make the most efficient use of artists time.


Communication An important aspect of visual effects production is communication. This includes the internal communication of ideas from our management team to the floor, and effectively initiating client feedback during all stages of production. Facilitated by our web based synchronised video playback system and client screening room, we are able to review our work with clients in real time; resulting in quick updates and faster turnarounds for changes.


Quality Control and Review Quality control and review of all work is an important part of the Intelligent Creatures production pipeline. This ensures that only the highest quality work is delivered to our clients.
