The movie is mostly inspired from Reservoir Dogs which in turn was inspired by Ringo Lam's City on Fire starring Chow Yun Fat.
Sanjay Dutt and Suniel Shetty alongside others are set to come back in a sequel. Hype is around of how these actors will resurrect their characters as they all died apart from Gaurav. Director Sanjay Gupta has stated the story will be original and the characters may have some supernatural doctoring in order to be resurrected.
The film was to star Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Sunil Shetty, Akshaye Khanna, Mahesh Manjrekar, Kumar Gaurav, Shilpa Shetty and Lisa Ray initially. But Akshaye Khanna opted out of the project subsequently, while Malaika Arora stepped in Shilpa Shetty's shoes and Namrata Singh Gujral was cast opposite Kumar Gaurav in lieu of Lisa Ray.[citation needed] The character of Renu Mathur (played by Namrata Singh Gujral) was the only role cast in Hollywood from the entire principal cast. All other principals including Amitabh Bachchan were flown in from Mumbai for the Hollywood shoot.[citation needed] This was Amitabh Bachchan's 126th lead role.[citation needed] The film was the first Bollywood film to be completely shot in Los Angeles.[citation needed] The film's production team used Hollywood technicians.[citation needed] Rohit Roy (Fattu Bhai from Shootout at Lokhandwala and popular television actor) makes an appearance in the Song "Ishq Samandar".[citation needed]
Kaante director Sanjay Gupta was involved in a long court case about this movie due to its being a copy of Reservoir Dogs[citation needed].
