Kankavli is a census town in Sindhudurg district in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is an important city due to the city's central location in the Sindhudurg district. All talukas are of an equal distance from Kankavli. Kankavli city is 460 km from Mumbai along the NH 17. Kankavli has a State Transport bus station and a railway station as well. Harkul Budruk is a village about 5 KM from Kankavli and is on the Railway Station Road. There is a temple of Bhalchandra Maharaj. The city is situated in between two rivers. It is 110 km from Kolhapur. It is a cultural, educational and politically rich city.

Kalmath Village is just 1.5 km away from kankavli. This place is know for their Kalam mango, hapus mango, cashew-nuts and karvande.

Narayan Tatu Rane (Ex C.M. Maharashtra state) happens to be from Varawade village which incidentally is in this taluka.

Kankavli is situated on the banks of River Gad.It is surrounded by villages like Nagawe,Bidwadi,Kalmath,Halval.It is an important railway Station on Konkan Railaway route as many Super fast Trains like Mangala,Netravati,Janashatabdi also take halt here.

Kankavli suddenly came into limelight recently.It is a Vidhansabha constituency of Former chief Mimister Of Maharashtra ,Mr.Narayan Rane & had witnessed many political battles between political party members due to Dynamic changes in the state politics recent times.(Narayan Rane left Shivsena & Joined Congress,situation became politically complicated as Narayan Rane Group was strong Shivsena follower & had bitter relations with congress activists,also Narayan Rane followerS & Nationalist Congress Partys Rivalry is famous.Nationalist Congress Party & Congress are allies in State Government).
