New York State Route 79 is a west-east New York State route that starts in the Finger Lakes region, runs through Central New York and ends on the western fringes of the Catskills. Its eastern terminus is located at the Pennsylvania state line in the town of Windsor in Broome County. Its western terminus is located at its junction with NY 414 at the southern end of Seneca Lake in Watkins Glen.

It is signed east-west, but from Whitney Point to the state line it runs in a north-south orientation.

From the PA border to the town of Colesville, NY 79 runs along the western bank of the Susquehanna River. Between Chenango Forks and Whitney Point, it runs along the eastern bank of the Tioughnioga River.

In Broome County it goes through Ouaquaga, originally a large Iroquois village which was destroyed by the Continental Army in 1778.

Communities along its route include the villages of Windsor, Whitney Point, Lisle, Burdett, and Watkins Glen, as well as the city of Ithaca.

Route Description

Broome and Chenango Counties

After crossing the Pennsylvania state line, NY 79 parallels the Ouaquaga Creek through Windsor, eventually hitting Interstate 86/NY 17. From here, it continues north, and eventually junctions with Interstate 88 in the town of Harpursville. There is also a junction with NY 7. The two run concurrent for a short time, until NY 79 continues northwest near the town of Belden. NY 79 crosses the Chenango River in Chenango Forks, also junctioning with NY 12. From here it continues northwest to Whitney Point, intersecting with NY 26, NY 206, just south of the Whitney Point reservoir. Shortly thereafter, it meets Interstate 81 at Exit 8. After this, it continues due west and enters Tioga County.

Tioga and Tompkins Counties

NY 79 spends a brief time in Tioga county in the town of Richford. Continuing west, it then enters Tompkins county in the town of Slaterville, and is known as Slaterville Rd. After passing through Slaterville Springs, Besemer, and Bethel Grove, it becomes E. State St. in the City of Ithaca. In the heart of downtown Ithaca, it junctions with several state roads, including NY 96B, NY 13, NY 34, NY 96, and NY 89. Known as Seneca St. in downtown Ithaca, it cuts through the city at the very bottom of Cayuga Lake. For a short time, it runs concurrently with NY 96, and eventually departs northwest from Ithaca, where it is known as Hector St.

NY 79 continues west as Mecklenburg Rd. through the town of Mecklenburg for the rest of its stretch in Tompkins County. Vast stretches of farmland and hills are visible during this most scenic part of the route.

Schuyler County

After entering Schuyler county, NY 79 becomes Lake Ave. and passes through Bennettsburg into the village of Burdett. At its junction with Schuyler county route 5 (Tug Hollow Rd.), it turns south and is referred to as Main St. until its terminus at NY 414.
