North East Scotland is one of the eight electoral regions of the Scottish Parliament which were created in 1999. Nine of the parliament's 73 first past the post constituencies are sub-divisions of the region and it elects seven of the 56 additional-member Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs). Thus it elects a total of 16 MSPs.

The North East Scotland region shares boundaries with the Mid Scotland and Fife and Highlands and Islands regions.

Constituencies and local government areas

In terms of first past the post constituencies the region covers:

  1. Aberdeen Central covers the central area of Aberdeen City.
  2. Aberdeen North covers the northern area of Aberdeen City.
  3. Aberdeen South covers the southern area of Aberdeen City.
  4. Angus covers the southern portion of the Angus council area, northern portions of the Dundee City and a small eastern portion of the Perth and Kinross
  5. Banff and Buchan covers the northern area of Aberdeenshire.
  6. Dundee East covers the eastern area of Dundee City.
  7. Dundee West covers the western area of Dundee City.
  8. Gordon covers the central area of Aberdeenshire and a small eastern portion of the Moray.
  9. West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine covers the southern area of Aberdeenshire.

The constituencies were created in 1999 with the names and boundaries of Westminster constituencies, as existing in at that time. Scottish Westminster constituencies were mostly replaced with new constituencies in 2005[1]
