Formula One, abbreviated to F1 and also known as Grand Prix racing, is the highest class of single-seat open-wheel formula auto racing. It is a worldwide sport, involving an annual World Drivers Championship, most recently won in 2007 by Kimi Raikkonen, and World Constructors Championship, most recently won in 2007 by Ferrari, and is one of the most expensive sports in the world; annual team budgets average in the hundreds of millions of US dollars. It is based around a series of races — 18 in 2008 — known as grands prix, held on either permanent, custom-constructed road courses or temporary, closed-off public street circuits.

The sport is regulated by the FIA, Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile, and is generally promoted and administered by Bernie Ecclestone, who largely controls the sport's commercial television rights. Read more...

Mario Gabriele Andretti (born February 28, 1940) is an Italian American former racecar driver, and one of the most successful Americans in the history of auto racing. He is one of only two drivers to win races in the four major motor racing categories: Formula One, IndyCar (USAC), World Sportscar Championship and NASCAR, the other being Dan Gurney. He also won races in midget cars, sprint cars and drag racing cars.

During his career, Andretti won four IndyCar titles, the 1978 Formula One World Championship, and IROC VI (the 1978 - 1979 IROC). To date, he remains the only driver ever to win the Indianapolis 500 (1969), the Daytona 500 (1967), and the Formula One World Championship, and, along with Juan Pablo Montoya, the only driver to have won a race in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, Formula One, and an Indianapolis 500. No American has won a Formula One race since Andretti at the 1978 Dutch Grand Prix. Andretti had 109 career wins on major circuits.

Andretti had a long career in racing. He was the only person to be named United States Driver of the Year in three decades (1967, 1978, and 1984). He was also one of only three drivers to win races on road courses, paved ovals, and dirt tracks in one season, a feat that he accomplished four times. At his final IndyCar win in April 1993, Andretti became the first driver to win IndyCar races in four decades and the first to win races in five decades.

The name Mario Andretti has become synonymous with speed in the United States, similar to Barney Oldfield in the early twentieth century and Stirling Moss in the United Kingdom.

October 12 – Fernando Alonso wins the 2008 Japanese Grand Prix, with Robert Kubica second and Kimi Räikkönen third. Championship protagonists Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa were both penalised for on-track incidents; Massa finished seventh and Hamilton twelfth. [1]
October 6 – The BMW Sauber team will also retain its current drivers for 2009: Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld keep their race seats, with Christian Klien staying on as test and reserve driver. [2]
October 1 – The Williams team announces an unchanged driver line-up for 2009: Nico Rosberg and Kazuki Nakajima will continue in the race seats, whilst Nico Hülkenberg will keep his role as test and reserve driver. [3]
September 28 – Fernando Alonso wins the inaugural Singapore Grand Prix, the first F1 race to be held at night. In an event mixed up by a crucial mid-race safety car period, Nico Rosberg finished second with Lewis Hamilton third. Both Ferrari drivers failed to score. [4]
September 14 – Sebastian Vettel wins the 2008 Italian Grand Prix after starting from pole position and becomes the youngest driver in Formula One history to win a Grand Prix. Heikki Kovalainen finished second and Robert Kubica third.
September 12 – Ferrari announces that its contract with reigning champion Kimi Räikkönen has been extended to the end of 2010, the same length as team-mate Felipe Massa's existing contract. [5]
September 7 – Lewis Hamilton achieves a surprise victory at the 2008 Belgian Grand Prix after rain in the last three laps causes Kimi Räikkönen to hit the concrete wall. Felipe Massa finished second and Nick Heidfeld third. Hamilton then receives a 25-second penalty for cutting a chicane and drops to third.
August 28 – The 1961 champion Phil Hill dies at the age of 81 from complications arising from Parkinsons' Disease. [6]
August 24 – Felipe Massa wins the 2008 European Grand Prix amidst controversy of him leaving his pit box at a dangerous time and nearly hitting Adrian Sutil. Plus, controversy over Kimi Räikkönen leaving his pit box with the fuel hose still attached and injuring a mechanic. Lewis Hamilton finished second and Robert Kubica third. [7]
