The Professional Certificate in Education is a one-year course in England and Wales for undergraduate degree holders that allows them to train to be a teacher. It is very similar to the Postgraduate Certificate in Education, but does not carry credits towards a master's degree.
Many providers of teacher training offer both the professional and postgraduate certificates in education. The additional work required to achieve the credits towards a master's degree is based on more extensive assignments. These assignments make up a small part of the required workload during the P.G.C.E. year.
