Aditya Sehgal (Vivek Oberoi) is a young law student. He meets Suhani Sharma (Rani Mukerji) at a wedding function. She is a medical student who scorns love and romance as trivial diversions.
He is immediately attracted to her, but she spurns him. Aditya is relentless and she is driven to admit that yes, she is attracted to him too. All seems set for a big wedding, but their two families meet and then fight. The couple after a failed attempt to avoid each other decide to break all rules, move into a dilapidated apartment and begin a happy married life.
After a while, however, the couple soon begin to argue and Suhani runs away. She has an accident and goes into a coma Aditya searches for her desperately and finally finds her in the hospital.. Aditiya realises how much he really loves Suhani.
Saathiya was well received by critics. The film's realism and A.R Rehman's music were considered the highlights. However it was thought to be inferior to the tamil original directed by Mani Ratnam. It came second in the box office in its opening weekend behind Kaante. However in the weeks ahead it showed stronger legs and ended up being the highest grosser that December.
Saathiya won six awards at the Filmfare Awards.
