Salaam Namaste (Hindi: सलाम नमस्ते, Urdu: سلام نمستے, English: Urdu and Hindi greetings, respectively) is a 2005 Indian Bollywood film directed by first-time director Siddharth Anand and produced by Aditya Chopra and Yash Chopra. The film stars Saif Ali Khan and Preity Zinta in their fourth film together. Arshad Warsi and Tania Zaetta appear in supporting roles. Released on September 9, 2005, it was the first Indian movie to be filmed entirely in Australia.[1]

The film tells the story of two young and modern Indians, Nick and Ambar, who have left their homes in India to make a life on their own in Melbourne, Australia. The story follows one year of their lives, dealing with their problems and relationships, from their first meeting at a wedding ceremony, to their decision to move in together without marriage, to their breakup upon discovering that Ambar is pregnant.

Salaam Namaste became one of the biggest box-office hits of 2005 in India, as well as India's biggest hit in the overseas market that year.[2] On September 24, 2005, the script of the film was invited to be included in the Margaret Herrick Library, which is operated by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.[3] Zinta received several nominations for her role in various film ceremonies, such as the Filmfare Awards, IIFA Awards, Star Screen Awards and Zee Cine Awards.

The tagline of the movie is "Let's get to know each other."

Synopsis

The movie is about two young progressive Indians, Nikhil Arora, who calls himself "Nick", (Saif Ali Khan) and Ambar Malhotra or "Amby", (Preity Zinta) who have left India to live their lives in Melbourne, Australia. Nick had finished studying Architecture in his hometown of Ludhiana before moving to Australia to pursue the dream of becoming a chef, and is currently working at a restaurant called "Nick of Time". His job allows him have a laid-back lifestyle and get up late in the morning, both aspects that he values very much. Ambar left home because of her parents' insistence that she get married in her hometown,Banglore, and is currently studying to become a surgeon; she pays for her education by getting a job as an R.J at a local radio station, "Salaam Namaste".

When Nikhil is supposed to do an interview at "Salaam Namaste", he is late (oversleeps) resulting in a very public argument with the RJ, Ambar Malhotra. After several misunderstandings and fights, they begin to fall in love and decide to move in together. It is only after they start living together that they truly begin to understand each other and discover each other's livestyles and perspectives. Hence, the tagline 'Lets get to know each other'. The movie then focuses on how their relationship progesses, until the day Ambar discovers that she is pregnant. Nick doesn't want the baby, and Ambar initially plans to have an abortion but cannot bring herself to do it. She ultimately decides to keep the baby and tells Nick off for refusing to have a part in the baby's life. Nick decides that their relationship isn't working and thinks that it would be better if they split up. However, both are forced to continue to live in the same house for the rest of the year because of their comical and eccentric landlord, Crocodile Dundee, played by Javed Jaffrey.

Over time, Nick realizes that he is still in love with Ambar and begins to warm to the thought of becoming a father, and sharing a life with her. It's almost too late when he finally proposes to her - Ambar gives birth to twins and the two reconcile.

Production

Several people have made cameos in the film. Abhishek Bachchan is the narrator and makes a special appearance as a doctor towards the end of the film. Director Siddharth Anand makes an appearance as the taxi driver towards the end of the movie. The mother and son in the bookshop Saif Ali Khan's character visits, are actor Arshad Warsi's real-life wife and son, Maria Goretti and Zeke. Preity Zinta's real life boyfriend, Ness Wadia makes an appearance as the man reading the newspaper, whom Preity sits by on the bus.
