Shinpan (親藩 Shinpan?) is a Japanese term which denotes the status of a domain's ruler as a recognized kinsman of the Tokugawa shogun. While all shinpan were recognized as relatives of the shogun, not all relatives of the shogun were shinpan; an example of this is the Matsudaira clan of the Okutono Domain. The shinpan lords were also known as 家門大名 (Kamon daimyō)-- non-daimyo relatives, such as the Gosankyō were also known as kamon. Shinpan included the Gosanke, the Matsudaira clan of Aizu, the Matsudaira clan of the Fukui Domain, and others.
