On 2 February 1960, Phoenix-area pastors of the Sun Valley Conservative Baptist Association held a meeting to discuss the possibility of opening a nearby denominationally-based college. After further meetings, the pastors agreed to begin college-level instruction beginning in the Fall semester 1960. Originally, classes were held in a local Baptist church while leaders developed a 35-acre (140,000 m2) campus in Paradise Valley West. The college made continual strides, and in 1975, the Arizona State Board of Education approved the institution's burgeoning program of education. As the years progresed, Southwestern continued to add new programs at attract a wider cross section of students. Today, it remains a regionally accredited degree-granting institution.
Today, Southwestern College offers degrees at the bachelor's level in: Christian ministries, business administration, behavioral health, Biblical studies, elementary education, secondary education, family studies, music ministry, and music education.
Students are required to be born-again believers in a Christian church. Regularly-scheduled chapel attendance is mandatory for full-time (at least 12 credit hours) students as well. The college also requires that students maintain a minimum standard of conduct based on Biblical principals including abstinence from extramarital sex, alcohol and drugs, and a promise that they will not view or listen to any form of media (including movies and music) that would be "immoral or spiritually debilitating."
