The Bride with White Hair (traditional Chinese: 白髮魔女傳) is a 1993 Hong Kong wuxia film directed by Ronny Yu.
The film's main character, Lian Nichang, is very loosely based on the protagonist of Liang Yu Sheng's novel Bai Fa Mo Nu Zhuan [1]. However the director Yu himself saw the film as a “Romeo and Juliet” story and said that the lovers’ struggle against fate and their heroic duty inspired him more than the familiar trappings of most martial arts adventures [2]. As such the movie departs significantly from the original source .
In the film Lian Nichang, a young female assassin who belongs to a heretical martial arts cult, falls in love with a swordsman from the orthodox Wu-Tang clan, and tragedy inevitably follows.
A sequel The Bride with White Hair 2 was made a year later and directed by David Wu Dai-Wai.
