Yaadon Ki Baraat was a 1973 Bollywood film directed by Nasir Hussain. It starred Dharmendra, Zeenat Aman, Vijay Arora, Tariq, and Neetu Singh. The film became a box office hit.[1]It is still remembered fondly for the score, by music director R.D. Burman. One song, Chura liya hai, as sung by Asha Bhosle and Mohd. Rafi (inspired by Donovan's title song from If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium (1969)), is particularly well-known.

It's a classic film of Indian cinema and one of the most remembered of the 1970s.

Synopsis

The film uses the familiar Bollywood theme of siblings separated by fate. Gangland killers assassinate an honest man who defied them, killing his wife as well. The couple's three sons flee the massacre and lose contact with each other. They grow up in entirely different circumstances and are re-united only when one of the sons, played by Dharmendra, sets out to find the villain who killed their parents.

Shankar (Dharmendra), Vijay (Vijay Arora), and Ratan (Tariq) are three brothers. On their father's birthday, their mother taught them a song titled "Yaadon Ki Baaraat" which they held dearly to their hearts. As fate may have it, one day, the boys' father witnessed a robbery by Shakaal (Ajit), and his henchmen. To protect their identity, Shakal decided to kill the boys' father before he could go to the police. So one night, Shakaal and his men storm into the boys' father's room and kill both their mother and father. Shankar and Vijay witness the act and flee. They make their way to a passing train, where Shankar is separated from Vijay.

Several years pass by and the boys have grown up. Shankar is haunted by the memory of his parent's murder and is now joined by his friend Usman on a crime spree around the city. Vijay was adopted by a fairly wealthy man who is the groundskeeper to the love of his life, Sonita Zeenat Aman And Ratan, was raised by the boys' maid, and changed his name to Monto. With his new identity, Monto started a band and does gigs at hotels for a living.

Trivia

  • The film earned actor Vijay Arora the title of the 3rd Potential Superstar of the decade besides Amitabh Bachchan and Rajesh Khanna.
  • The film earned two Filmfare nominations: Dharmendra for Best Actor and R.D. Burman for Best Music.[2]
  • Nasir Husain had wanted to cast his regular actress Asha Parekh, but she was busy dancing abroad, so he gave the role to Zeenat Aman.[3]
  • Neetu Singh, who had been a child actress in the 1960s, debuted as a heroine in Rikshawala (1972). When that film flopped, she took a small role in this film to revive her career. The hit song "Lekar hum" was picturized on her, and her sexy red costume and her frenetic dancing got her so much attention that she was immediately elevated to heroine roles again.
  • The film was later remade in Telugu as Annadammula Anubandham. Most of the songs were also remade, such as "Churaliya hai," which was now "Gulabi puvvai," and the title song "Yaadon Ki Baarat," which was now "Anantihrudayala Anandageetam."
  • The film was also remade in Tamil as Naalai Namathey, but the Hindi songs were not copied.
  • A clip of the film appears in a scene in the 2004 blockbuster Swades, and remains to be the only film scene in which all the three superstars of the film industry namely, Aamir Khan (as a young artist), Shahrukh Khan (as the lead) and Salman Khan (who's dad Salim Khan wrote the movie) are seen together.
  • This was Aamir Khan's debut film, with him playing a young Tariq in the title song of the film.
  • Aamir Khan's debut film as a leading man was Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak which was also produced by the same production house but it was directed by his cousin Mansoor, instead of his uncle Nasir Hussain.
  • The film's central theme- of a song uniting separated family, was producer Nasir Hussain's favorite. Using it in earlier film Pyar Ka Mausam and subsequent film Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin.
